Signal Fire Residency - Outpost 2010

I've just returned from my week long residency with Signal Fire. This year they set up in the upper Clackamas River in the Mt. Hood National Forest. There were four artists, each provided with a large 10x10 foot tent, spaced about 200 yards apart with the hosts, Amy and Ryan, maintaining a base camp, where we all met for dinner and socializing each evening...until nearly midnight most days. My planned project for the week was a hand-surveyed and hand-drawn map, and that is just what I did. It was a special treat to work in an area that I was unfamiliar with - I hadn't even seen a map of the area. This really let me continue working on a concept built around the value of knowing where you are, as opposed to knowing what your location is. I navigated by compass or, as time went on, by recognizing places and landmarks.
