Website Update

I'm updating my website... It should be prettier and a bit less of a jumble (in the gallery). Most of the changes are already up and working. A few more will occur... but it's too damn hot in here right now.

Map Making

I have a full head of steam going with my map project for Seattle. The title of the work (it also includes 3 beaded panels) is Cultural Laminae and the map addresses the overlaying of cultures in a geographical area. The map is an irregular shaped copper panel, about 30 x 50 inches centered on Union Bay. All of the details are hand stamped with letter dies and a variety of punches. While the map is fairly accurate, it floats in time - certain modern features are omitted and some ancient features are added in. I used my own hand surveyed map of Union Bay (so, my own personal "culture" is present) and merged it with modern and antique topographic maps and Seattle Public Utility maps. My most recent additions to the map were the portage that I use to get to the lake and tracing of Ravenna Creek and features that are found near it. Work goes on...

What's up

"Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate", is at the Paris Gibson Square Art Museum in Great Falls, Montana. I have one work in exhibition on racism and hatred.

"Hand to Hand" (see links) is scheduled for Bowling Green, Kentucky this fall. I've also signed up to make six more gloves for this large and growing collaborative exhibition on the Iraq War.

I'm working away on my Seattle commission piece and on by-product art coming out of that effort. During research canoe trips in the area I began removing trash (mostly plastic) from the lake shore and much of the smaller plastic debris is being turned into a sculpture. You can read more on that process in my other blog, "View from the Canoe".

Fragile Existence

Fragile Existence, a group show with my friends from Northwest Designer Craftsmen opens April 20 in the beautiful Bellevue Community College Art Gallery in Bellevue, Washington. The show features work based broadly on the central theme of the "Martian Chronicles" - inhumanity between cultures/species etc. I'll have a few of my politcal/violence themed works in this show.

Artist Reception is April 22 from 5:30 to 6:30.
The exhibition is up from April 20 to May 21. Gallery hours are 12-6 M-Th and Sat.

City of Seattle Commission

Today I received the final approval for an art commission for a Seattle Public Utilities space in the Seattle Municipal Tower. I'll be creating several pieces of work with a theme connecting public utilities and archaeology based on the premise that Seattle Public Utilities is in the side-business of creating archaeology.

My work, 'The Death of Po-Han', received a jurors award at the 30th Annual Mesa Contemporary Crafts Competition.

The 'Hand to Hand Project', a collaborative art exhibition on the Iraq War, put together by Cecelia Kane, was named Best Political Art by the Atlanta Journal constitution.

It's been a good month

I have had a good December, to say the least.

Here's what's up with my art...

ONE -My work, 'The Death of Po-Han', is in the 30th Annual Mesa Contemporary Crafts Competition. This year, the juror was Namita Gupta Wiggers, the curator of Portland's Contemporary Craft Museum. The Mesa show is a special place for me as the 26th Annual led to my first museum acquisition by the Museum of Art and Design. The Mesa show opens January 23 and runs to March 15.

TWO - I have a solo show, 'Scott Schuldt: the Politics of Beads' at the gallery, Bead and Fiber, in Boston. The exhibition opens January 7 and runs to February 21. Several of my more political pieces (except for 'The Death of Po-Han') will be exhibited along with my Kevlar/copper gloves from Cecelia Kane's ''Hand to Hand" collaborative exhibition on the Iraq War.
